Does Hoodia Gordonii Work? 3 Ways Hoodia Gordonii Helps You Lose Weight
By Bob Sherman
Hoodia Gordonii can help you lose weight in 3 specific ways.
You're probably already familiar with the name, Hoodia Gordonii. This product has become popular for nearly everyone looking for an appetite suppressant. It has be proclaimed as a miracle weight loss supplement. Hoodia Gordonii is being added to many products, including multivitamins, meal shakes as well as capsules.
You may remember previous "miracle" pills like Ephedra. This supplement helped speed up your metabolism and burn fat. However, diet supplements containing Ephedra were linked to a high rate of serious side effects, including death. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned Ephedra and now most supplements make a claim that they are "Ehpedra Free".
So, does Hoodia Gordonii work and is it safe?
Hoodia Gordonii is a succulent plant that has been used for years to suppress appetite of the Bushmen of the Kalahari during long treks in the desert. Normally, when you eat food, some food turns to glucose. When the glucose in your body rises it eventually signals to your brain (the hypothalamus) that you are full. Scientists say hoodia fools your brain into thinking your stomach is full, thus eliminating your hunger. While Hoodia is not a normal staple of the bushmen's diets, the bushmen seem to show no ill effects, except lack of hunger.
So far, no double blind clinical trials have been released showing the efficacy of hoodia gordonii as an appetite suppressant.
In 2004, 60 Minutes did a segment on hoodia. They went to Africa to investigate the possible effectiveness of hoodia. Lesley Stahl ate part of a stalk and noted that it tasted a little like a cucumber. While having no ill effects, Stahl indicated she was not hungry or thirsty all day.
The first scientific investigation performed in South Africa's national laboratory performed in the 1960s showed that animals feed hoodia lost weight. Thirty years later the active ingredient, called P57, was isolated and patented and licensed to Phytopharm.
Phytopharm spent more than $20 million on research. They found that obese subject given hoodia ate about 1,000 calories a less than those in a control group.
If we extrapolate that result to the average American male who consumes around 2,600 calories a day, this would significantly reduce their desire for food and cut their caloric intake.
While the active ingredient, P57, in hoodia is patented, the plant itself is not patented. Many growers have large fields of hoodia and are creating a number of products containing hoodia.

1) Hoodia Makes You Physically Less Hungry 2) Hoodia Turns Off The Desire To Overeat 3) By Turning Off Your Appetite Hoodia Allows You To Start Making Positive, Healthy Food Choices
However, there are a number of "Hoodia" products that, in fact, contain no hoodia at all. Unfortunately, there are scam artists who are taking advantage of the current demand for Hoodia by packaging fake Hoodia, fillers or even sawdust - and then selling it as Hoodia.
So, how can you make sure a product you are considering contains actual Hoodia Gordonii?
Examine the documentation on the product website stating authenticity of the Hoodia used. While some recommend only South African Hoodia, today, Hoodia is grown in many areas of the world. Hoodia seeds are available for export to anyone who wants to grow Hoodia. Look for Certificate of Analysis, CITES certification and an Organics Annex certificate. If there is no documentation, avoid the product.
You also want to make sure there is enough Hoodia to actually work effectively. How much is enough? Certainly, if there is less than 200 mg of Hoodia, it will not be effective in controlling your appetite. Most authorities recommend 400 to 1000 mg of Hoodia. You can start with a 400 mg dose several times a day. If that proves ineffective for you, increase the dose to 1000 mg. Your body may need several day to adjust to a dose, so make changes slowly.
And, check with your doctor before using Hoodia. If you have a medical condition that makes it hard to lose weight or a condition that requires frequent nutrition, Hoodia may not work effectively in your case.
